Young Enterprise Golf Day – June 16th 2010

  • Do you like playing Golf?
  • Would you like to play golf and help support the Entrepreneurs of tomorrow through Young Enterprise?

We are hosting a charity golf day in support of Young Enterprise at Overstone Park on the 16th June 2010 and everyone is welcome! To find out more please download the attached flyer for booking details.

Young Enterprise Golf Day 2010 Flyer

In a nutshell the cost for tea/coffee and bacon roll on arrival, followed by a full round of golf and then a buffet meal is only £32.50!

For businesses who would like some additional exposure on the day can show their support by having their branding displayed on a hole for only £40. I would say the words “Sponsor a hole” but for VAT reasons we are not allowed to sell it as sponsorship, so it is “showing your support and in return we’ll put a sign at a hole with your company details on it” ;o).

Should you have any questions either contact me, or Dawn Porch who’s details are on the flyer.

Young Enterprise Awards are a Success

So there was I was, due to leave for the Northampton and Daventry Area Final for the Young Enterprise awards and I was probably as nervous as hell, because I felt I had a lot resting on them being a success.

One of the challenges we faced was that there has a been a big decline in the number of schools taking part in Young Enterprise, for reasons I think are misguided and wrong, but that’s a discussion for another post. We needed to drum up interest and excitement for the project, so I railroaded through the area board a few things that had to happen for this event.

Firstly I felt the venue needed to be exciting, so what could be more exciting for student that the home of the Northampton Saints rugby team, Franklins Gardens. More than that that, fellow board member was able to arrange for a couple of the Saints players to meet the students and chat with them, and about the students projects.

Historically the trophies had always been those tacky tin cups, I pushed the budget and insisted we use glass engraved trophies which are must more impressive for the students to look at and hold.

We needed a speaker who would engage with the students, someone who is not your normal business speaker, and for that another fellow board member arranged for Brad Burton to volunteer his time to entertain the students.

The Chief Executive of Young Enterprise East Midlands arrived to come and see what all the fuss was about, so nothing like a bit of extra pressure there.

At the last minute a judge had to pull out meaning I spent most of the night before doing last minute judging of the entrants, meaning someone else had to step into my role of MC’ing the event. It’s partly a shame that I spent almost the whole event in a back room and missed the rugby players, the newspaper reporter, the visitors, mingling with the guests, but do you know what .. the rest of our team from the area board did fantastic and this is a thank you to everyone who helped make our first awards night organised by us, the new Northampton & Daventry Area Board for Young Enterprise, a success.

In particular I’d like to thank  Julia Watson, she runs an event organising company called W17 Limited and is on the area board. She pretty much pulled everything together using her skills of event organising.

Not forgetting everyone else on the day being;

  • Peter Douglas, runs a corporate finance company called Business Finance Services and is our treasurer and arranger of getting the Saints players to attend.
  • Julia Doherty, runs a recruitment company called Ethos Recruitment and our secretary, and for arranging Brad Burton to attend.
  • Chris Conway, fellow board member from Ford Motors who was running around looking after everyone on the night!
  • Richard Mawby, our youngest board member and ex-Young Enterprise student who looked after the students on the night.

…and I’d never forget the other two judges, Julian Winch from Snap-On Tools and Julie Furnival from Northamptonshire Enterprise.

Finally, this would not have happened at all without the financial support from our supporters on the night, who were;

We were also very lucky to have the support of some photography graduates from the University of Northampton who attended to photograph the event, which coupled with having a newspaper local reporter there, other cameras flashing and one of the YE student companies being a photography company we have lots of photo’s to upload!

If you would like to be involved in Young Enterprise, whether to help financial support projects such as the Company Program or to volunteer your time as a business mentor to students please get in touch!

Share your business knowledge and experiences

As some may know, I chair the Area Board for Young Enterprise covering the Northampton and Daventry area. One thing never ceases to amaze me is the shortage of people willing to volunteer their time to share their knowledge and expertise with the Entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

So why should anyone in business work with Young Enterprise? It doesn’t matter whether you are self employed, the manager of a large corporate business, or employed. It only matters that you have some experience of working in business, and are willing to share that knowledge. The students who take part in Young Enterprise are willing to learn from this experience, and the energy the volunteer picks up from these students is difficult to put into words. Quite obviously I recommend everyone gives it a try.

There are both Primary and Secondary School programs available, so for those who are only able to spare a few days here and there then look at the Primary Programs. Working with children in a primary school for a day or two is a true eye opener, especially as you start to see them “get it” as you deliver the educational program. At the Secondary School level the programs such as the Company Program generally run for a few months, but you and the students learn so much more. The students run a real company for around 6 months, deal with real money, and have the chance to go onto European Awards. The satisfaction a volunteer can get from seeing the students they work with go on to earn real money, overcome real challenges, and win awards is fantastic.

If you are based around Northampton or Daventry and would like to know more about volunteering for Young Enterprise please ask me for more information. Once you’ve experienced volunteering for Young Enterprise you’ll want to do it again, inspiring young entrepreneurs is very rewarding.

A date for your diary! – Sunday 6th December, come to the Grosvenor Shopping Centre in Northampton and visit the Young Enterprise trade fair on the first floor. You’ll see for yourself what the Young Enterprise Company Program is all about.

Support The Young Enterprise Awards

YOUNG ENTERPRISE COMPANY PROGRAMME
In the Northampton/Daventry Area of Northamptonshire we have 9 schools running 11 companies for one academic year. The students or achievers as we like to call them, who run the companies, are aged between 15 to 18 years old. Each company is selling a varied range of products and this year they have been involved in very successful trade fairs.
Its competition time and these 14 companies will be attending a showcase evening hosted by the Northampton/Daventry Area Board at Grendon Hall, Grendon, Northamptonshire on Monday 30th March 2009. At this event the companies will be competing for prestigious awards in the following categories:-

  • Best Company
  • Runners Up x 2
  • Best Trade Stand
  • Best Sales/Marketing
  • Best Product/Service
  • Best Presentation

We are looking for companies like yours to be involved and to support and present one or more of the awards.
The costs are £500 for the Best Company and £250 for the remainder. In return we guarantee to include your company’s name on the relevant trophy, ask you to present at the event itself and include your company logo on the programme, the power point presentation which will be shown in front of all the attendees at the event and in our press releases.
Of course we understand that in these difficult times businesses are finding it difficult but these achievers are our future business men and women and we need to support them as much as we can, so please give this matter your serious consideration and try and support us if you can.

What Young Enterprise is About

Students selling their products to the public in Northampton

Students selling their products to the public in Northampton

I have returned home this evening from spending an entire Sunday helping the Development Manager for Young Enterprise look after some 80 students in the Northampton Trade Far for Young Enterprise. This was made up of 11x Young Enterprise companies selling their company products to the public in the Grosvenor Centre in Northampton, a truly nerve wrecking experience for the children but yet such a fantastic learning experience.

Despite coming home from a 10 hour shift that started from carrying in and setting up the stands, through to looking after the wellbeing of the children and coaching them in techniques to approach passing trade, me feet ache, my legs ache, my back is killing me, and I am utterly exhausted. Yet I had a fantastic day and am looking forward to the Milton Keynes trade fair in January. There will be arund 100x trade stands at tha event, and some of the children I spoke to today and fired up and really looking forward to then.

From my own experience I have found when volunteering for Young Enterprise the children are extremely receptive to larning new skills in challenging new environments. This not only true for the oler children, such as those who were involved in the trade fair today (ages 15-17), but just as much with the Primary School children I spent the day teaching last week aged 9-10. These projects give them interesting new challenges that they my not usually find in the traditional school curriculum, and they are learning about teamwork, math, presentation and so many other skills without even realising it.

Whilst walking around checking they were all OK (and at one point scaring off a hoody who had his eye on what he thought was the Young Enterprise Development Managers laptop) I would frequently ask the students how the day was going, what sales they had made, and what profitability that gave them. Enouraging their math skills, asking how their marketing was going on, pointers to improve their stands, encouraging them when they got cold shouldered by some shoppers.

It never ceases to amaze me the fantastic ideas Young Enterprise students come up with each year for new products and services.

To see the energy these students had in their products, in their company, and for the small number of teachers who turned up their teachers enthusiasm in their students was really inspiring. I have no doubt in my mind that these children have come away from today’s fair much richer for the experience, and wth much more knowledge of how to improve their sales pitches, their pricing, their presentation and communication skills, and perhaps more importantly their confidence. I also met some children who so clearly have a fantastic future in front of them, who I have every confidence will do very well for themselves.

I may be exhausted, I ache from head to toe, I’m going to sleep like a log tonight, but I also feel so alive. I played an important part i helping the primary children last week learn about working together, teamwork, and communication, and why the countries of our world need to all work together. Today I helped many more children learn more about business, about life skills and so much more, and feeler richer in myself for it too.

That is what Young Enterprise is all about, and that is why I believe every Entrepreneur should volunteer for Young Enterprise and show their knowledge and experiences with the Entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
